🐶 Ralph’s Pawspective
Let me tell you a tail of missed opportunity… 🐾
I was this close to living my best life aboard a real choo-choo! The Mary Valley Rattler has a special dog-friendly carriage, which means I could’ve been zipping through the countryside in vintage rail style. But… my hoomans didn’t book early enough, and by the time we got there, it was all sold out. Cue the sad puppy eyes.
Still, it wasn’t all disappointment! I stretched my legs around the station and sniffed every corner of the historic platform.
There’s lots to explore, even if you’re staying paws-on-platform. The old carriages, restored tracks, and vintage signage made for an interesting wander (and great sniffing material). I even got a pat from a staff member. And bonus: I got to pretend I was the Station Master whilst Luna, unsurprisingly, inspected the books to make sure it was all in order.
There’s a café nearby too, but we weren’t allowed in there. Overall, it was a nice little outing, even if my dreams of becoming “Railway Ralph” were put on hold.

👤 Human Highlights
The Mary Valley Rattler is an iconic piece of Queensland’s rail history and a true gem in the heart of Gympie. From the moment you arrive at the beautifully restored historic station, you’re transported back to a time when travel was a little slower and a lot more charming.
The station itself is well maintained, with original timberwork, railway memorabilia, and a strong sense of community spirit. Even if you don’t catch the train, it’s still a worthwhile visit just to take it all in. There’s a café on-site serving coffee and light meals, plus a gift shop for souvenirs. The staff were knowledgeable and clearly passionate about preserving the railway’s legacy.

The train ride winds through scenic countryside and quaint little towns—something we didn’t experience firsthand this time (Ralph still hasn’t forgiven us for not booking), but we spoke with others who said the ride is peaceful, nostalgic, and a real treat for visitors.
A key highlight: the dedicated dog-friendly carriage. This is a fantastic addition for travellers with pets. But it’s very popular, and there are limited spots, so if you want to ride the rails with your furry friend, plan ahead. Bookings can be made online, and you’ll want to do this well in advance to avoid disappointment.
Parking was relatively easy, and the area around the station is flat and accessible. Even just walking around the station makes for a pleasant and leisurely outing.

Pro Tip
Planning to bring your pup? Book the dog-friendly carriage online well in advance—spots fill quickly and there’s limited capacity for canine companions.
