Oh. My. Dog. 🐶 If there’s a pupper paradise, I’m pretty sure I just set paw on it.
Great Keppel Island was a total tail-wagger of a day out! From the moment we boarded the ferry, my doggy senses were tingling – mostly because of the ocean breeze and the promise of fish and chips, but also the excitement of adventure!
Once we arrived, it was paws to the sand, and zoomies mode: activated.
We were welcomed with soft sand, salty sniffs, and crystal-clear water that was pawfect for a paddle. There are loads of dog-friendly beaches to explore, with plenty of space to run or chill out under a shady tree.
This place is seriously dog-friendly – we’re talkin’ wide open beaches, not too many hoomans, and plenty of space to sniff, dig, and roll around like no one’s watching (even though everyone was watching, because I looked fabulous).
There were lots of trees to mark, seabirds to shout at, and enough sand to fill up my hooman’s backseat of the car for weeks.
The hoomans were loving it too – peaceful, scenic, and not crowded like some of those other beaches where you have to fight for towel space. We strolled the island, sniffed every corner, and even had a delish lunch.
I give Great Keppel Island five enthusiastic tail wags! 🐶 – this island trip was pawsitively the best.

Great Keppel Island was an absolute win—not just for the pups, but for us two-legged adventurers too.
The ferry ride over was easy to book, and surprisingly scenic, with stunning views of the Capricorn Coast. Once you arrive, you’re greeted by pristine white sand, turquoise waters, and that relaxed island vibe that makes it feel like you’ve travelled way further than just 40 minutes offshore.
The island is easily walkable, with quiet beaches that feel like your own private slice of paradise. Whether you’re up for a full day of beach hopping or just want to unwind with your furry sidekick by your side, the laid-back atmosphere makes it all possible. The clear water is ideal for a quick dip or wading while keeping an eye on the pups splashing nearby.
There’s also a handful of cafés, bars and eateries for a well-earned lunch or drink under the palm trees, where you can enjoy the island’s natural beauty and peaceful setting.
It’s probably one of the most pet-friendly and accessible islands around, offering a welcoming and beautiful dog-friendly destination.
Whether you’re a local or visiting the region, Great Keppel Island is one of those hidden gems that delivers the perfect mix of adventure and serenity—with a sandy side of tail wags.
Pro Tip
Bring a towel (wet dog fur is no joke) and a portable water bowl – this island is made for adventures but still needs good puppa manners. And maybe bring a brush… unless you want to take home half the beach in your pup’s fur!
