COLOURS. Everywhere.
Boxes in every colour imaginable.
Seagulls doing rude fly-bys.
Honestly, it felt like someone built a whole tiny village just for me and Luna.
I immediately picked out my favourite (blue… or maybe the stripey one… or the red one).
Turns out these little boxes cost hundreds of thousands of hooman treats — apparently some sell for $350,000 to $500,000. Whatever that means.
I did my best puppy eyes. I even sat nicely. Still no bathing box. Rude. Would still move in immediately if given the chance.

👤 Human Highlights
Brighton Bathing Boxes are one of Victoria’s true must-visit destinations and an iconic feature of Port Phillip Bay. The 82 bathing boxes at Brighton Beach are heritage-listed and remain largely unchanged from their original construction over 100 years ago, featuring timber framing, weatherboard exteriors, and corrugated iron roofs.
Bathing boxes and boatsheds are intrinsic to Victoria’s bay beaches, with approximately 1,860 spread across the state. What makes the Brighton collection so special is the way individual licensees subtly personalise their boxes through colour, artwork, and minor structural variations. Viewed together, they transform the beachscape into a striking collective work of art.
Despite their eye-catching appearance, the boxes are purely for storage — no electricity, no water, and no modern amenities. Their value lies in history, location, and tradition rather than luxury. The area can feel quite touristy, with a steady stream of visitors taking photos, especially on weekends and sunny days, but the sheer visual impact and cultural significance more than justify the crowds.
Dogs are welcome on lead (check local signage and seasonal restrictions), making this a worthwhile stop if you’re exploring Melbourne’s bayside with your four-legged companion.

Pro Tip
Visit early in the morning or closer to sunset for softer light, fewer crowds, and the best photos — both for hoomans and well-behaved pups.🦴 Fetch more details (external links)
