🐶 Ralph’s Pawspective
This place had promise. Big rocks. Cracks. Shadows. Mystery smells. My kind of environment.
I immediately went into full explorer mode — scrambling up and down the giant boulders, nose deep in every crevice. Then I smelled something… fishy. A LIZARD. Hiding in the cracks like it owned the place. Obviously, it became my personal mission to get in there and investigate.
Unfortunately, despite my best efforts, my head was too big, the crack was too small, and my hooman’s patience was wearing dangerously thin. Apparently, “wedging your dog between rocks” is “not ideal” and “a bad idea.” Rude.
Still, 10/10 for adventure. Would sniff again.

👤 Human Highlights
Captain Thunderbolt’s Rock is an interesting historical stop just outside Coonabarabran, offering a brief insight into local bushranger history and a chance to stretch the legs during a long drive.
The large boulders are climbable, but visitors should note that a reasonable level of fitness and sturdy footwear are required. For many, the best option may be to admire the formation from a distance rather than scrambling over the rocks.
Unfortunately, the experience is somewhat diminished by the amount of graffiti on the rocks, which detracts from the natural setting and historical significance. That said, it remains a pleasant enough spot for a short break, quick wander, and photo stop if you’re passing through the area.

Pro-Tip
If you plan to climb the rocks, wear sturdy shoes and take care — otherwise, it’s still a nice place to stop briefly and enjoy from ground level.
